Wikipedia
has a defintion that I think is worth reading.

I also believe that enlightenment is a process we spirits go through on our human journey, learning to lighten our burdens through the lessons of the suffering we have chosen in the path of our life. A spiritual lightening of the burden of the physical. Some do this over a lifetime, others acheive varying degrees of raising their consciousness closer to the level of love and enjoying their lives for the gift that they are and that they have been given. In the end, we all pass from this physical realm on further journeys, our destination determined by the power of our free will, just as it is given as part of our experiences here in the 3D realm of physical existence. Actually, I've always said we live in more than a 3-Dimensional world since we have more than 3 senses. Many would agree that there are 5 accepted senses of physical perception. Touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight. So right there, there's at least 5 dimension or aspects to our existence. Don't limit your thinking like our physical world is limited, we live in an existence that is the ocean of infinite pontentialy. This isn't a new concept and I'm not the first person to say it, nor will I be the last. Truth is the word said with clarity and a message that you feel. Clarity is a gift. Vision. Life is a gift. Love the life you live the life you Love. Live the life you love the life you Love. Living and Loving are both a part of a happy life.
